The cost of rent around SA

Making the decision to buy property for sale in Roodepoort or rather go for a rental can be a tough one. However, if you would prefer staying away from a long-term commitment at present, we give you a guideline to average rental prices across South Africa.

It is a tough decision choosing whether to buy property for sale in Roodepoort or rather rent a space, especially considering the tough financial climate in South Africa at present.

There are a lot of reasons that people opt to rent over purchasing a property. Currently, with the technical recession and sky-high living costs, it puts landlords in a position where increasing prices is not that easy.

Renting is also generally a cheaper option and offers the tenant complete flexibility, as opposed to being locked into a long-term home loan. There is also the issue of maintenance, with the landlord being responsible for any of the major fixes, such as a burst geyser.

If the rental market is appealing to you, then you may be interested in the data that Private Property pulled from their website in July 2018, showcasing the average cost of rentals across the country.

Looking at the most expensive province first, the Western Cape stood head and shoulders above the rest with a mammoth median rental price of R13 500. This would have been expected though, considering that many experts highlight the high living costs that come with staying in the Mother City.

Another of the coastal provinces followed, with KwaZulu-Natal grabbing second spot, though they were a lot cheaper with a median rental price of R9500. Gauteng was listed in third place, where the median rental price dropped by another R500.

Check out the full list below:

  • Western Cape: R13 500
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R9500
  • Gauteng: R9000
  • Northern Cape: R8800
  • Limpopo: R7798
  • Mpumalanga: R7400
  • North West: R7280
  • Eastern Cape: R6000
  • Free State: R5995

When it comes to luxury rentals, the Western Cape and Gauteng dominated as they grabbed nine of the spots in the list of the 10 most expensive suburbs, where prices shot as high as R45 000 monthly.
