Dean van Zyl, Nico Fouché, Patricia Theledi and Michelle Fouchè won gold medals at the South African Cadet Junior and Senior Championships. The feats of the Ruiter Wrestling Club wrestlers saw them being crowned South African Champions. The competition took place earlier this month in Pretoria and involved top wrestlers from all over the country. Not only did the Ruiter wrestlers win four gold medals, they also won three silver and nine bronze for a total of 16 medals.

Dean, who is also the club’s head coach, was happy to have led from the front and be an example to his young charges.

“As a coach, I am really proud of everyone because we have worked hard for the past two months. We’ve had tons of extra sessions of wrestling and every morning at 6am the team would go out for a jog. These really gave us a head start on our fitness levels and also helped the team bond and increase our team spirit,” he said.

Dean added that as an athlete, he was proud of himself and what he had accomplished in Pretoria. He credited hard work and his teammates for helping him to prepare for the competition and succeed.

“My main motivation is to be an example to the young wrestlers I coach – just to show them my dedication and what it takes to compete at the higher levels of the sport. This makes it easier if you’re coaching,” he said.

Ruiter Wrestling Club’s performance at the championships ensured they are the top-rated wrestling club in the province. The club is based at Hoërskool Bastion where they train. For more information about the club, contact Dean van Zyl on 082 850 9871.
