Last Friday was a very emotional day for everybody in the Caxton Joburg West office.

We were totally bowled over by the incredible response we received from the community. Why, you ask?

Early that morning, the Record sent out an appeal to the community for donations for the Knysna victims.
Within about two hours, goods started flooding in, so much so that some of the staff started repacking and sorting clothes, food, blankets and toys.

The truck left early on Monday morning for the airport and everything reached Knysna safely.

I have said it before and I will say it again. The Roodepoort community is awesome with a dash of amazing, topped off with a huge dose of generous.

But there is another reason why I was extra emotional. You remember the story about Monica Harawa from Durban Deep who was crippled by polio? She has a 17-year-old daughter who was forced to leave school because her parents cannot afford the school fees.

A benefactor stepped forward and offered to pay for her full tuition until she finishes her matric year. I was completely blown away.

There was not a dry eye when we broke the news to her. But you can read more about that in next week’s issue. There is also a video that will be on our website later this week.

News from Knysna is that they don’t need any more clothes, but rather toiletries and medical supplies such as eye drops, lip balm and so forth. Details can be found on the Record‘s Facebook page.

Until next week, thank you for taking care of one another.
Ciao
