Two locals were selected out of 20 gifted South African dancers to attend the first ever Red Bull BC One Camp that took place in Cape Town this June.
Manthe Ribane from Roodepoort Northsider area and Courtnae Paul from Ferndale were immersed in lectures and couch sessions by prominent names in the international and local scene. These names included international Red Bull BC One All-star Roxrite, member of international Hip-Hop award winning dance crew the Jabbawockeez, Rynan Pagui, choreography legend Somizo Mhlongo, Lorcia Cooper and more.
Alongside legends from the scene, the dancers received valuable coaching across various topics including business, nutrition, sports psychology and media training. All of these to equip each dancer with knowledge that goes beyond their craft, to create a broader understanding of career growth and self-well-being. After the camp ended, it was up to the talented dancers to go back to their communities and share what they have learned.
Paul said,”The camp was an unexpected combo of both personal and professional growth. We were put into an unknown space with little understanding for what was about to take place, but shortly realized it was all worth it.
“We had amazing coaches and trainers come in from Germany to the UK, to locally grown specialists who all gave us insight and large wake up calls into what we currently are, and what we can be. The camp pushed everyone to see the reasons they do what they do, and to accept and work hard at our individual responsibilities and parts we play in the dance industry, and to those around us,” Paul added.
One of the main things Ribane learnt through her dance journey was the importance of taking action in order for change to happen. She is enthusiastic about the idea of sharing her skills with those around her and hopes to aid their development.
