The power of social media

They’ve helped us find missing people, locate stolen wallets, and now the big one – finding someone wanted by the police.

Throughout last week, the Record kept its readers updated about the death of a baby whose father was wanted for questioning. Our regular updates on the incident clearly raised the awareness of many motorists, who kept a lookout for the missing vehicle. One reader followed the story very closely on Facebook and on the Record’s website, and contacted journalist Riaan van Zyl after she spotted the car the alleged killer was driving near Clearwater Mall. Riaan rushed off to the scene, contacting the police on his way. The man was apprehended and appeared in court last Friday.

It is not pleasant having to publish stories about innocent lives being taken, and our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the child. May you find peace from above. We can now only hope that the police will do their utmost to investigate the case and bring some kind of closure to the grieving family.
