Africa Week in full swing

AUCKLAND PARK – Channel Africa celebrates Africa Week with different events promoting unity.

SABC’s Channel Africa kicked off the annual Africa Week at the SABC on 19 May.

The initiative started with general manager of Channel Africa, Solly Phetoe, announcing what should be expected throughout the week, which runs from 19–28 May. The chairperson of the African Diaspora Forum (ADF) Marc Gbaffou including the general manager of Brand South Africa, Sindiswa Mququ as well as representatives from other African countries.

Channel Africa has partnered with ADF to reflect and celebrate the station’s 50th anniversary and the African Union’s 53rd anniversary.

The build-up to Africa Day has begun and all the organisations involved are working to educate Africans about their continent. Africa Day is held on 25 May each year, it marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, in 1963. It is a celebration of the diversity of the continent, and acts as a call to unity. It presents an opportunity for Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves in support of all government interventions to develop a better Africa and a better world.

Channel Africa also celebrated 50 years of broadcasting. Phetoe said that Channel Africa’s vision is to be ‘The Voice of the African Renaissance’. “This payoff line refers to the regeneration, rebirth and revitalisation of Africans. Both in the continent and the diaspora,” said Phetoe.

The week is celebrated with talks about xenophobia, various activities that will promote the spirit of unity among African communities, and celebrations for the anniversary and Africa Day on 25 May at the Yeoville Recreation Centre.
