WATCH: Between reality and a dream

Coldfield, a progressive alternative rock band, demands to be heard with their determined and passionate outlook.

Five years ago, while guitarist, Damian Meyer was teaching guitar to vocalist Sharné van Zyl, Meyer decided he needed to start a project with the talented young women. By mid January that idea was fully realised along with the equally talented guitarist, Damien Richards, bass guitarist, Ross Cooke and drummer, Ryan Greenwood.

In the few short months they have been a band, determination has allowed them to reach up and grab the stars. One of their first ever songs, Nightmare, topped the charts on local radio stations. It reached number two on Coastal Radio, number one on Zone Radio, and international radio stations in the United States, such as 99Rock (WFRD FM) where it hit the top five, and in the United Kingdom.

Coldfield, which refers to the state between being awake and REM sleep, is preparing to expand the band’s horizons even more. They plan to release a music video, a four or five track extended play (EP) recording, and will be performing a series of gigs in order to fundraise for a trip to Canada, where they plan to record even more music.

“The opportunity to record in Canada will give us the chance to reach a wider audience, make contacts and take things to the next level,” explained Meyer. Eventually the band would want their songs to be the sound track to films and television.

Each band member has a different taste in music, thus the band’s sound is a musical tangle of elements from different genres that make Coldfield’s music hard to describe. The members themselves hail from different areas, including Roodepoort, Randburg and Fourways. However, their differences only make the band stronger as everyone’s opinions are respected when it comes to the band and practising at The Workshop Studio in Roodepoort. “We experienced all our growing pains for about three weeks and now we are all on the same page,” Meyer added.

“Without the commitment that our band has shown, we would not have lasted,” said Van Zyl. “We don’t wait for the opportunity to come by, you have to go out and get it. We are in an environment where every second person wants to be a musician. You need to find the deal,” added Van Zyl.
