There are no words to describe the forlorn look in some people’s eyes.

I saw this at a local retirement village in Florida last week.

The people were sitting outside celebrating Mother’s Day and it really pulled at my heartstrings. Some were just staring into space while nibbling on the various treats provided for the occasion. I was told their children had left them there and hardly ever visit them, even though some live close by. It was so sad. My parents are extremely important in my life. I cannot imagine not having them around.

They live in Nelspruit and although I cannot visit them often, I call at least twice a week.

The way we treat our parents very often determines the way our children will treat us one day. I saw the same sadness in the eyes of the animals at the Roodepoort SPCA. I know you can’t compare the two, but being abandoned and neglected affect all living beings.

The dogs were so excited to see visitors and started barking in the hope that they would be noticed and adopted.

Shouldn’t we take care of all living beings? Life happens, and time is very precious and sometimes limited, but all it takes is an hour of your day to spend time with your loved ones, including your four-legged children.

Mother’s Day should not be celebrated once a year, but every day because you never know what might happen tomorrow.

Until next week, take care of one another.
