A pitch perfect night

RUIMSIG – Drakensburg Boys Choir will serenade the audience with their melodic tunes.

The Drakensburg Boys Choir DBCS will conduct a roadshow to find more talented boys to add to their choir.

The roadshow will be held on 13 May at Maragon Private Schools, Ruimsig, Trinityhouse Little Falls and Constantia Kloof Primary. These auditions are done throughout the year to recruit new boys with singing talent.

The roadshow is specifically for each school. Marketing manager, Belinda Espag said that pupils get to audition to see if they can be part of DBCS. “We would also like schools that are interested in accommodating us to contact me so we can visit them on our next roadshow to Gauteng,” said Espag.

She went on to add that the DBCS school is small and can only accommodate one hundred and twenty pupils. “It is unusual for the intake to be greater than 30 boys annually and this is in Grades 4 to 8.” She did express that the impact on larger schools would be minimal considering the entrance requirements.

In the past two years, the school has placed about 70 pupils.

Espag further divulged that the school believes strongly that a musically talented pupil being ‘denied’ the opportunity to have an exceptional, world class quality choral education because he is not given the opportunity to audition, would be a sad turn of events. “Our boys’ talents often exceed what a ‘normal’ school choir can offer and these are the boys we are looking for,” expressed Espag.

She added pupils leave the DBCS at the end of their Grade 9 year with musical knowledge equivalent to a student in their first year at university. She concluded that many of their pupils have and continue to receive scholarships and bursary offers from exceptional independent high schools across the country and even abroad. “This inherently shows the value of our boys and the necessity they play in senior school choirs and music departments.”
