JOBURG – The red carpet hosts some of the countries best at the premiere of Free State.

Camera flashes lit the red carpet at Montecasino when the stars came out to celebrate the fruits of their labour. The Free State premiere was all people could talk about on 18 April.

The movie stars, both new and veteran actors, combined to make the movie proudly and boldly South African. Lead characters, Andrew Govender and Nicola Breytenbach are fresh new faces we should look out for on the silver screen.

The romance is set in South Africa’s apartheid era and love plays the biggest role. It follows the star-crossed love between an Indian man and a White woman in a society that would see them apart. Govender said that he could relate to his character’s deep respect for family and added that he always wanted to be an actor. “An actor or a doctor,” said Govender.

Breytenbach said she could relate to her character because she is a hopeless romantic. She went on to add that she always had the desire to be an actor but she just did not realise it at the beginning. “I did school plays when I was younger and one day I just decided that I should just go for it,” said Breytenbach.

Leleti Khumalo, who plays the role of a domestic worker, Maria, said the driving force for people to go out and watch the movie should be because it is a topic that has not been tapped into. “I personally did not know that at the time Indian people were not allowed to be with White people, and it was nice to talk about such aspects in our history we did not know,” said Khumalo.

All the actors agreed that this movie is unique because the emphasis is on how love triumphs over opposing forces in a terrible time in the country.
