Every job has its ups and downs.

In journalism it is exactly the same although sometimes it is more down than up.

Last week, however, was really an eventful and exciting one.

I have been a journalist for many years, but last week was the first time I interviewed someone wearing only a Speedo and a shirt. This director of a local company was in high spirits.

Needless to say I was slightly taken aback, but the reason for his attire made sense.

He recruited his staff to do the Daredevil Run later in February to highlight the prevention of and create awareness about male cancer.

His reasoning is that men often don’t talk about testicular or pancreas cancer.

He feels that prevention is better than cure.

Taking the photograph also was fun. The men in his office clearly were uncomfortable with wearing Speedos only. I take my hat off to them for having had the courage to pose for a picture.

The other interesting and fun interview was with Dirk Stoltz who lives in Ruimsig.

He is one of the most versatile actors in this country, portraying various roles ranging from the bad guy to a comic.

Dirk is very humble, has an amazing sense of humour and doesn’t see himself as a “celebrity”. I always thought the better-known you are, the more often you are considered for various roles. It is clearly not the case.

Dirk said an increasing number of young people turn up for auditions and having young blood coming into the industry is very good.

Despite the everyday challenges I often face, I still love my job.
