The DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) warns students to avoid registering at bogus colleges.
There are things to look for before enrolling in the private education institutions such as the registration status of these institutions with the DHET. You can also call the DHET’s call centre on 080 087 2222 to inquire about the authenticity of a college or check the registers of private colleges and private higher education institutions available on the DHET’s website.
Director and media liaison officer of the [Department of Higher Education and Training https://www.dhet.gov.za/] Khaye Nkwanyana said that in order to make informed decisions when choosing a private education institution, the public and students must ask the following questions before binding themselves to an agreement with the institution:
- Is the private education institution registered with the DHET?
- If registered, is the certificate for registration displayed?
- Does the institution offer qualifications in which you are interested?
- Is the qualification you are interested in listed on the certificate?
Here is a list of colleges that have been identified to be bogus in the Braamfontein and surrounding areas:
- eLearning Systems (Pty) Ltd trading as eDegree in Braamfontein
- Johannesburg City College in Braamfontein
- Johannesburg Varsity College in Braamfontein
- Monash Technology Institute in Braamfontein
- Swiss Hotel Management School in Braamfontein
- Edu-Campus/Hope University based in 145 Commissioner Street Johannesburg
- MSC Business College in 165 Smit Street, Johannesburg
- South African Institute for Management (SAIM) in 71 Marshall Street, Johannesburg.
“The Department is working closely with the SAPS (South African Police Service) and other law-enforcement agencies in closing down unregistered private institutions,” said Nkwanyana.
