Randburg SPCA helps Msawawa

NORTHRIDING – SPCA Randburg responds to fire at Msawawa hours after experiencing their own fire.

A fire destroyed a charity storage container  at the Randburg SPCA on 11 November, a few hours before another fire raged through Msawawa Informal Settlement.

In one day, within hours, these two fires managed to massively destroy property and uprooted the lives of people and animals.

The parking lot of Randburg SPCA was packed with concerned residents who offered to help or give donations.

General manager Craig Rudman appealed to the community on Hot 91.9FM, for donations that will help the organisation rebuild the damaged areas.

The radio station managed to use a system called ‘Quickit’, where listeners could donate money to the Randburg SPCA.

Within an hour, almost R44 000 was raised for them.

Rudman said, “It was amazing to see how the amount was just increasing every minute we looked, we are so blessed and thank Hot 91.9FM and a huge thank you to the community.”

A fire broke out at the Msawawa Informal Settlement in Kya Sand only a few hours later.

The courage and shear tenacity of the Randburg SPCA shone through.

As an organisation committed to the safety and security of animals, the group mobilised within hours after their very own fire tragedy.

A large truck was sent to the settlement with boxes to rescue the animals trapped in the fire.

“We rescued about 10 or 12 dogs and they are safe in our kennels for the time being,” added Rudman.

He added that volunteers arrived and are cleaning the premises and clearing out any damaged items from the storage container.
