UJ postpone Alumni festival due to protest

AUCKLAND PARK – UJ has postponed its Alumni and Friends Festival due to the student protests.

Student protests that have recently rocked the country have forced the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to postpone its UJ Festival: Alumni and Friends that was supposed to take place over the weekend from Friday, 30 October – Saturday, 31 October.

Milcho Damianov, the Executive Director: Institutional Advancement for UJ said that more than 3000 alumni and their 600 children had registered to attend the festival.

“The safety and well-being of our alumni, their families and friends are of utmost importance to us. Much preparation has been put in, to ensure that our alumni could enjoy a festival filled with the best that the continent has to offer in an assortment of stimulating thought, fine art, and world class live entertainment. In view of the current circumstances that prevails upon South African universities, we do not deem it appropriate to enter into festivities,” Damianov said.

He further added that the university remained committed to celebrating their first decade of prominence and prosperity with their alumni in 2016. “We would also like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the postponement. We look forward to welcoming the alumni and their families next year,” he said.
