Every morning, on our way to work, we drive past people begging at traffic lights and stop streets, and sometimes we give either money or food.

This time of the year, when the days are becoming colder, we also hear of so many charities who are doing their bit to bring some relieve to the poorest of the poor. These charities are collecting food, blankets and warm clothes to help bring some relieve to various impoverished communities.

This got me thinking, are we instrumental in creating a nation that thrives on hand outs instead of finding the odd job? Before I am crucified for making this statement, let me explain.

I often over hear people saying they offered a beggar a job but that he/she refused because they claim they make more money begging at traffic lights that what they would have made when they have a job. As long as we keep on giving, they will keep on asking for hand-outs.

I have tremendous sympathy and empathy for them – the poorest of the poor – and I have a lot of admiration for those people who make it their lives work to help others in need. I also realise that work is scarce and sometimes people need a helping hand, but does this not create a huge burden on the working population?

Look at it this way, the government is very proud of the fact that it can provide free medical aid to those who cannot afford it, houses for people who really needs it, free schooling, social grants and sometimes food.

Can you as a reader continue to give to other people or does charity start at home? With the poor economy most of us find it more and more difficult to keep their heads above water, can you still afford to help others?

Do we give so much in an attempt to help that we omit to teach them how to help themselves? Don’t get me wrong, if I can help someone I will, I was just wondering if we have misplaced sympathy or is it for the greater good.
