This past weekend has been very sad

A man was gunned down in Witpoortjie last Friday night for reasons we at the Record have yet to find out. From the many Facebook messages it seems as if the victim was a husband and father of two young boys. It is so sad that a man lost his life in such a manner.

A week before during an attempted hijacking in Horizon View two suspects were shot dead by a man who was later duped as a hero for saving the lives of two women.

Crime is out of control and it is happening on our doorstep. Although it is easy to blame the police, I am sure they have their hands full, I cannot help but wonder where all this is going to end. Criminals seem to be more blatant and fearless and victims live in fear every day of their lives.

So many people advocate for the death penalty to be brought back, but will it really make a difference? Will it deter potential and hardened criminals from committing crimes?

I would like to hear what you think. Keep in mind what South Africa went through during the Truth and Reconciliation trials many years ago as well.

Do you think there someone out there who would be willing to sentence a man to death?
