I had to giggle this weekend.

My dad received a touchscreen phone as a present from my sister and although it is the entry-level phone, he really struggles to operate it.

Whenever I try to phone him, he usually hands the phone to my mother who manage to activate the call, but then I can hear them arguing whether the call came through or not. Trying to teach old dogs new tricks seems more challenging than ever.

This made me think how a necessity technology has become. As a journalist, we need to tweet, publish news article on the webpage, familiarise ourselves with Facebook and generally make sure we are technologically knowledgeable.

On top of that, the company has supplied each journalist with a tablet to be able to work more effectively. If there is news breaking stories over weekends, we must be able to handle everything the West Rand’s capable digital manager is doing during the week.

Sometimes it can be really challenging and mistakes slip through, like it did this weekend. My sincerest apologies for that slip-up.

I also realised that although the world is controlled by technology, I am not sure how we, and every other business will manage should it fail.

I extend – again – an invitation to our readers to participate in the wonders of technology and make contact with us. We would like to hear from you.

Until next week, take care of one another.
Ciao
