Last week Thursday was our annual Caxton Awards function to recognize excellence in the company.

That includes print and digital media as well as our Get It magazine and it is usually a very grand affair. Representatives from all the branches get together.

People who knows me will know that I wasn’t born with a compass. Fortunately our distribution manager Phillip Opperman was kind enough for me to follow him to the venue which was in Johannesburg CBD. Just the thought of driving in the CBD gives me the shivers.

When the official function started, that is after all the welcoming speeches and entertainment, the first awards were handed out. Just to explain, the judges, to what I understand has to sign a confidentially clause not to even hint about who the finalists or winners are, everything is handled like a state secret.

After the first awards, the newspaper of the year awards were handed out and the Record won. Which is excellent news accept for the fact that my bladder decided it needed the bathroom and I missed out on one of the biggest moments in my life – my five seconds of fame on stage and saying a few words of thanks.

Needless to say the Record team was elated.

The last time the floating trophy was in the Witpoortjie office was 10 years ago and that was when the Roodepoort Northsider, now only known as the Northsider won in its category.

I am very proud of being part of the team and I am also very proud of my team. The journalists are doing a sterling job, but I also have to mention the “behind the scenes”people. Our sub-editors and layout staff plays just as important role. Without their keen eyes and creative minds, the paper would not look as good as it does.

Since I couldn’t get my award on stage this year, I figured I will have to do it next year then.

Can’t wait.

Take care of one another.
Ciao
