Sick of the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day traditions and activities? Why not shake things up and rather celebrate ‘Singles’ Awareness Day’.
Singles’ Awareness Day is a humorous holiday celebrated today 14 February. It serves as an alternative to Valentine’s Day for people who are not involved in a romantic relationship.
On this day, single people gather to celebrate their single status. Some want to remind romantic couples that they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life.
Rather, why not consider doing the following things for Valentine’s:
- Use the day to finish something you’ve been meaning to tackle for a while. For example, working on that show-piece garden, painting that half-finished masterpiece, or even finishing that pesky book you were meaning to finish.
- Alternatively, why not send love someone else’s way: Volunteer locally and help those less fortunate than you at various charity groups in Johannesburg. - Spend the day treating yourself this Valentine’s. It’s no surprise that Valentine’s Day is usually a time where huge amounts of money is spent on gifts that are horrendously overpriced and normally cost half the price any other day of the year. Don’t wait for someone else to make your day extra special. Since you don’t have to worry about spending half your paycheck on gifts, take half of that money and spend it on yourself.
