Carols by Candlelight at Botanical Gardens

Carols by Candlelight at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens held their annual carols by candlelight event last Friday evening.

People of all ages attended the event in their numbers, bringing with them a picnic basket and blanket to enjoy the music. The Carols by Candlelight is part of the Old Mutual Music in the Gardens Series.

Those in attendance were treated to brassy swing jazz from the 1950s by Loyiso Bala, Nathan Roe and Graham Watkins, who make up the band Swing City.

The South African Nation Biodiversity Institute partnered up with the Botanical Society of South Africa to fund big projects such as the Carols by Candlelight. This effort is to raise the public’s awareness about the gardens and raise money.

Botanical Soicety’s Karen Carstens said the event is a way for people to enjoy nature as few know about the gardens.

“Having events like these which involve the community is a great way to raise awareness about our gardens. We also sell the candles and we reinvest into the gardens,” said Carstens.

Concert-goers were also encouraged to open their hearts to Gauteng’s young disadvantaged children in need by supporting the South African Child Welfare association’s Christmas gift box charity drive.
