‘Ain’t no mountain high enough’

FAIRLAND – Aliya Bauer is on a mission to try and raise funds for two cricket players from Alexandra Township Chiefs to participate in a world record attempt on the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Imagine playing cricket on a uneven field about 5149 metres above sea-level.

This is one of the challenges that a group of experienced cricket players will aim to complete when they reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The challenge is called Mount Kili Madness and it will see cricket greats like England cricket player Ashley Giles and South Africa’s own cricket legend Makhaya Ntini. The challenge will also raise funds and awareness for Cancer Research UK, Tusk Trust and Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation.

Fairland resident Aliya Bauer became part of the challenge when she decided to give Raymond Kamogelo and Robert Moloisane, two young cricket players from Alexandra Township, a chance to be part of the adventure.

“It is now my dream for Kamogelo and Moloisane to reach new heights and to be part of the record books when they will attempt to play cricket on the summit of Kilimanjaro, in order to break the world record for the highest game of cricket ever played.”

According to Bauer, the two are playing for the Alexandra Township Chiefs.

“Participation in cricket has provided these players an escape from alcohol and drug abuse and it has allowed several players to reform and lead a safer lifestyle away from gang-related activities that are common in townships. Apart from just playing cricket, the Alexandra Township Chiefs are using the game as an avenue to create awareness about various social causes that are affecting children, youth and women in the township.”

Bauer explained that the challenge these two young cricketers now face is that they still need to raise funds to go to Mount Kilimanjaro, where they will be part of the South African contingency competing in this event.

“We need to raise R52 000 for each player as this will cover the expedition fees, park fees, flights, accommodation, gear and clothing costs.”

She added that if anyone wants to help these cricketers to reach their dreams they can contact her directly.
