Catch the Parlotones frontman live at the end of the month

JOBURG – Top musician discusses music before his solo gig on 26 June.

Lead singer for one of South Africa’s most successful rock bands, The Parlotones, Kahn Morbee (36) talks about himself, the band and music ahead of his solo show at The Barnyard Theatre Cresta on 26 June.

“We’re still touring, rehearsing, writing and creating as much as ever,” he said, shortly after The Parlotones played at Durban Botanic Gardens on 8 June.

“The future is unknown but exciting and filled with the best of intentions and ambitions.”

The Parlotones recently relocated to Los Angeles, United States of America (USA), but has spent time performing in South Africa.

In between this, Morbee performs as KAHN, a solo project of his.

“It’s a chance for me to grow as a musician and explore other creative options in my approach to writing, studio and performance. I am a very prolific writer and it affords me an opportunity to have all my songs heard.”

He said that his favourite musical instrument is the voice.

“It is the primary messenger within a song, it carries the melody, the story and the emotion. It is the instrument I personally feel most comfortable with.”

The band’s move to the USA was to focus on the American music market.

However, Morbee said that the international rock music industry is not that different from South Africa’s and both are changing.

“Music around the world is in a flux and the same, only size differs. Music is an industry that has been forever changed by technology and the internet, thousands of musos doing it on their own, traditional labels floundering, people are really unsure of the future of music. There will however always be people who love creating music and people who love consuming music, no matter where you are in the world.”

The Parlotones will perform at The Barnyard Theatre Cresta on 6 August.
