Woes Rand — Everything from good jazz to DJs to a concert to celebrate 20 years of freedom is covered this week. There’s also a band from Slovenia that cannot be missed. Be sure to book your tickets for the 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy Concert early at Computicket.

Friday 30 May

Jazz musician George Sax will be performing at Hard Rock Café in the Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. Whilst studying fine arts at the University of Witwatersrand he associated himself with highly profiled jazz musicians at some of South Africa’s premier jazz venues such as Bass Line in old Melville and Rumours in the infamous Rockey Street. Friday 30 May

White Rabbit Concepts and Carfax in Newton present Group Therapy, an event that spans over one night and includes two separate rooms for partying with DJs such as DJ Kenzhero, Blk Jks Soundsystem, The Cutt, Benson, Liver and Moe Joe. Saturday 31 May

Straight out of Slovenia, Red Five Point Star released their third record Worst Case Scenario in 2011 through Megalith Records in USA and through Kapa Records in Europe. The band combines some of the best modern ska techniques, traditional rock ‘n roll, upbeat high octane punk rock and that full big band sound. The band is followed by Fuzigish, The Sunday Punchers and Fridge Poetry. A R60 cover fee is charged at the door. Thursday 5 June

Enjoy a cool Thursday night at Wolves in Illovo. Thursdays at Wolves is Howl Night, where local music acts perform. Expect to see Koji and Lacey May. Saturday 7 June

The City of Johannesburg claims back its rightful title of Major Entertainment Capital of South Africa with the 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy concert at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northriding. Zahara, Jahiem and Brandy will entertain you from 7.30pm. Tickets cost between R495 and R895 per person and can be purchased from Computicket.
