Flashback Thursday

Interesting news from the Festive Season of 30 years ago — Friday 2 December 1983.

Festive news from around thirty years ago looked a lot different than it might look now.

In the bottom left corner on the front page of the Friday 2 December 1983 edition of the Record Karen Bowes reported that since completing its new parking lot an additional 700 vehicles could be accommodated on the popular Flora Centre premises on Ontdekkers Road.

A few sets of twins and one set of triplets decided to give their Christmas money (presumably, their allowance for November or December) to the less privileged. The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Langlaagte benefited from their youthful generosity.

Littering was to be a thing of the past by 1 April 1984, one article reports, as the local municipality in conjunction with the ‘Keeping South Africa Beautiful’ Association made it punishable with either a R500 fine or six months’ imprisonment.

Santa Claus offered his services in Roodepoort during the Festive Season thanks to the Leo Club of Horison. For a mere R1 per present you could have your children’s presents delivered by Santa Claus to your home in the Roodepoort, Florida, Witpoortjie, Lindhaven, Wilro Park, Roodekrans and Horison areas in 1983.

If such a service still existed, would you use it to bring joy and amazement to your children’s faces?
