Shaun Jacobs ups the stakes

Local musician making waves on the South African stage

Shaun Jacobs. Remember the name, for this lad and his band are breaking borders in both local and international music scenes.

The first single “Love Can”, off his second album of the same name, has been topping the charts since its release earlier this year, and the album debuted at number four on iTunes last week. Produced by Simon Painter of Beverley Hills, Los Angeles, Love Can arrived hot off the heels of his first album Paper Wings which was released in 2012.

Originally from Brackenhurst, Alberton, the talented 28-year-old multi-instrumentalist began learning drums at age four, and progressed to bass and lead guitar later on as a teenager. Although he started off as a solo act, he was later joined by fellow musos Craig Sparks on bass guitar and Andrew Sowter on drums.

It may come as a surprise to learn that this creative and soulful musician has a pretty run-of-the-mill day job.“I am a bookkeeper by day,” said Jacobs, chuckling. “I still work hard for a living so that I can support my wife who will be taking maternity leave soon.”

Jacobs and his band will be taking to the stage at Rumours Lounge on 17 October at Rocking for CANSA, with all proceeds raised going to the non-profit organisation. Catch him at Tanz Live in Blackheath on 8 November where he will be joined by the Graham Watkins Project and Lonehill Estate.
