Mommy, can I have a cellphone?

How old should children be before they are given their own cellphone?

What rules should come with owning a cellphone? Do you know what your child is doing on their phone and who they’re speaking to?

In today’s age, these are serious questions that should be not be taken lightly.

The advent of the smart phone, while exceptionally convenient, opens your children up to a whole new world of responsibilities – and dangers.

New social media platforms crop up faster than you can master them. So how do you know what your child is doing on their cellphone and how do you police it?

It is far too easy for pedaephiles and other undesirables to access our innocent and naïve children. And what about cyber bullying? Kids can be cruel at the best of times but now it’s not just on the playground and in the classroom that children have to contend with victimisation. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube, Mixit, Whatsapp, chat rooms, and the list goes on. And, once the photos, videos or comments have been posted there’s no deleting them from the web. You might be able to remove them from the original platform they were posted on but they’ve been retweeted and posted to more sites than you’re even aware of.

Every day I’m more grateful that I was raised in a simpler time and fear for our youth. All I can say is prevention is better than cure. You can’t afford not to be on Facebook and Twitter if your children are there. You need to know how all these platforms work and try to be one step ahead of both them and the psychos waiting to lure them in.

You’ve made a brave decision to be a parent. Good luck. I don’t envy your challenge.
