Maryna takes winning in her stride

Local athlete shares her remarkable story of growth, perseverance and passion for running.

Maryna Bijker received the award for the Senior Road Lady, as well as the Best Women’s parkrunner, at the Roodepoort Athletics Club’s recent prizegiving ceremony.

Speaking to the Roodepoort Record, Maryna shared that she started running just before Covid-19 but says it was during lockdown she truly committed herself.

“It wasn’t easy; it required discipline, self-control, and pushing through tough days. But I kept going, knowing that every step made me stronger,” she said.

She received second place in her age category in the 10 km at the Valentine’s night race that took place at the Randburg Harries Athletics Club. She finished the race in a commendable 47 minutes.

“I enjoy running because the mental benefits are endless. Running has cleared my mind, reduced stress, and given me a sense of accomplishment. It teaches patience, resilience, and the value of setting goals. Every race, every training session, and every personal best is a reminder of how far I’ve come.

“It’s not about running, but it’s about growth, both physically and mentally, and thanks to the club, I get to share this journey with like-minded people who inspire me every day.”

To encourage beginner runners, Maryna says, “Every great journey begins with a single step. Don’t compare yourself to others – run at your pace, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. The road is always there to welcome you.”
