Bowls for a good cause

Visually Impaired Bowlers South Africa (VIBSA) host a bowling tournament to support the blind and partially sighted individuals at Florida North Bowling club.

An extraordinary event recently unfolded at the Florida North Bowling Club, blending sportsmanship, camaraderie and generosity.

Visually Impaired Bowlers South Africa (VIBSA) Central Gauteng hosted a fundraising bowling tournament to support next year’s Disability National Tournament, which is an event that takes place annually.

VIBSA’s mission is to empower and enable blind and partially sighted individuals to enjoy law bowls, assisted by dedicated directors who guide them through the game.

According to Karin Gouws, president of the VIBSA Central Gauteng, these fundraiser tournaments are of significance to visually impaired bowlers mainly because most of them are dependent on disability pensions, even though some have careers similar to sighted people.

On this sunny day, many bowling clubs across Roodepoort and Gauteng came together to raise these vital funds.

There were both visually impaired and sighted bowlers participating and playing alongside Protea players and directors who have represented South Africa internationally.

Karin expressed gratitude to the Florida North Bowling Club for their continued support and generosity in always allowing them to use their facilities.

“We were able to raise funds towards next year’s national tournament, and we are thankful for the opportunity to use facilities,” said Karin.
