Tournament draws top Tai Chi talent to Florida

Tai Chi practitioners from far and wide descended on Florida.

Tai Chi South Africa hosted their annual open tournament on September 21, drawing competitors from across the greater Johannesburg area.

Seven schools participated, with athletes ranging in age from six to 83.

The event featured both weapon and open-hand divisions, providing a platform for practitioners to showcase their skills and test their abilities in a competitive setting.

“Tai Chi is more than just a martial art,” explained Maria Crossling, an instructor at White Lotus Tai Chi and chairperson of Tai Chi South Africa.

“It’s a practice that promotes calmness, relaxation and mindfulness.”

The tournament served as an opportunity for participants to apply their training in a controlled environment.

“By putting students under pressure in a safe setting, we can assess their ability to maintain composure and execute the precise movements of Tai Chi,” Maria added.

Tai Chi is suitable for people of all ages. For young practitioners, it can improve focus and reduce anxiety. Older individuals often find that Tai Chi helps with balance, increases lung capacity and strengthens the core. Ultimately, it’s a gentle yet effective exercise that benefits people of all ages.
