New milestone for a parkrunner

Geoff completes his 100th parkrun and raise prostate cancer awareness.

Geoff Corry completed his 100th parkrun at the age of 73 on August 3 but his journey to this milestone was not without its challenges.

Growing up, Geoff has always been a sports enthusiast. He played soccer, table tennis, golf and darts. He started his weekly parkrun at Len Rutter Park in 2014, and the idea was to keep fit and enjoy Saturday mornings unwinding and connecting with nature.

“My parkrun journey has been amazing, and I’m very grateful that I’m 73 and I can still run. I believe that the word old is just a descriptive word and has nothing to do with your age; it’s more about what you do and how you feel.

“I could have achieved my 150th milestone already, but I have been busy doing activities that test my sporting prowess and keep me fit. I do camping, hiking and participate in the 5km races,” he said.

Geoff also shared that a few years after he started his parkrun, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he would like to use his journey to raise awareness among other men to prioritise their health and go for checkups when they suspect anything.

“I want to encourage men to get checked and, to talk about their health and prioritise it.”

He concluded by saying his main message and aim is to shatter the stigma around men’s health and to encourage men to seek medical attention if they feel that they have a problem and not wait for too long like he did.
