Community roots for hockey trio

A five-a-side tournament was hosted to raise funds for three local hockey players selected for the Masters Hockey World Cup.

Fives Futbol at Hillfox hosted a thrilling five-a-side tournament fundraiser for three local hockey players who are selected to represent South Africa in the Masters Hockey World Cup, taking place in Cape Town this October.

On July 20, football teams and supporters gathered at Fives Futbol to engage in a tournament as part of the fundraiser. Cawekazi “Cawe” Daca, Viwe Mzozoyana and Lyle Barlow were selected for the 35+ age group and are now gearing up for the tournament of a lifetime.

However, their journey to the World Cup is not without its challenges. As self-funded athletes, they are required to raise a staggering R30 000 each to cover their expenses. To reach this goal, the trio, along with their friends, organised a series of fundraisers, including a successful indoor soccer tournament and a boerewors roll sale.

According to Lyle, their latest fundraiser saw six teams battle it out on the pitch, with a great turnout from supporters and even a few members of the Patriotic Alliance in attendance.

“The event was a resounding success, and we are so grateful to have this much support. This also motivates us to compete at our absolute best because we know we have a community rooting for us,” Lyle said.
