Senior bowlers’ tournament come of age

The Sables Super Ten Tournament turns 21 years old this year.

This year marks exactly 21 years since the birth of the Super Ten Tournament, hosted by the Sables senior bowlers. Sables is the name of the district (province) under which bowling clubs in the West Rand are classified according to the national structure of bowls as a sport in South Africa.

Senior bowlers between the ages of 60 and older, also known as veterans, came together 21 years ago and formed an association called the Sables Men Seniors. This association aimed to promote the competitive sport, promote health and fitness among the bowlers, and regularly create a get-together spirit.

The association grew over time with over 150 bowlers from various clubs, and they started playing games every Tuesday, and that’s how the Super Ten Tournament was formed.

Traditionally, the tournament is hosted by Discovery Bowling Club. Teams from the Johannesburg Bowling Association (JBA), known as the Madalas, Sedibeng, Bowls Gauteng North (BGN), Mpumalanga (Lowveld), and Ekurhuleni, battle it out on the field every Tuesday.

Recently the Discovery Bowling Club held a tournament and despite the cold and windy conditions, the competition was of high standard and numerous spectators who braved the cold, were not disappointed.

Results in the different formats were:

• Singles and Pairs, won by the Madalas
• Trips and Fours won by Lowveld
• Overall winners were the Madalas
