The parkrun has become the epitome of bringing the community together. Dedicated volunteer June Williams, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, embodies the true essence of fearlessness.
June started attending the Ruimsig parkrun in September 2023, and the significance of the parkrun is the friendly and welcoming energy from fellow volunteers.
Every weekend, she would gear up for the run, cheering on participants with her infectious enthusiasm and kindness. June’s commitment to the parkrun goes beyond mere attendance; it goes beyond dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and encouragement within her community.
“There was a point where I was unable to do the parkrun anymore and decided I would rather come and watch my grandson. A friend of mine suggested I volunteer, and the rest was history!
“I adore the kindness and energy from the participants. I was attending the parkrun as usual when one of my dear friends decided to surprise me with a birthday celebration and cake. It was so thoughtful, and I am so grateful,” June said.
June’s birthday celebration served as a testament to a life well lived and a commitment to community service that spans generations. Reflecting on her journey, she credits her longevity and ability to challenge herself each time she attends the weekly parkrun.
“It keeps me young at heart,” she added excitedly.
