Paddling stalwart catches another international wave

Selected team manager Nkosi Mzolo says to be selected, certain criteria and level of experience are needed.

Roodepoort’s canoeing stalwart, Nkosi Mzolo, was selected as team manager of the South African team set to represent the country in the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Sprint Championships.

Nkosi and four others that he will be managing will soon pack their bags and represent the country in one of the highest-level competitions in the most exciting water sports.

Although Nkosi won’t be participating in the competition himself, he will be playing a vital role behind the scenes, expertly managing and overseeing the participants to ensure their safety and readiness to compete in the 500m race.

He is a highly respected figure in the canoeing world and has received numerous awards and recognition in various categories. Currently, he is the manager of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (SCRC), one of the largest and most esteemed canoe clubs in the region.

Speaking to the Roodepoort Record, Nkosi mentioned that this is a big achievement for the country, especially looking at the sports, arts, and culture departments.

“For us and the rest of the country, it would be an achievement if they could make it to the semi-finals with the preparation that they’ve had. If you compare them with other countries, they spend months on training camps because they receive more than enough support from their departments,” he said.

This gentleman’s journey started in the early months of 1999 when he was just 12 years old. Over the years, he has tirelessly worked up the ranks, culminating in his current esteemed position. He fondly described his journey as the most rewarding, having had multiple opportunities to travel and experience different cultures through his passion.
