Comrades 2024: Roodepoort cop shows endurance

Roodepoort police officer Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe participates in the Comrades.

Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe of Roodepoort Police Station demonstrated remarkable endurance and dedication by completing the gruelling Comrades Marathon, also known as the Ultimate Human Race.

Kennedy was one of the 356 runners from the police nationwide who took part in the 97th edition of the Comrades on June 9, from Durban City Hall to Pietermaritzburg.

The accomplished sports enthusiast finished the 85.9km in just seven hours and 52 minutes.

“The experience of running the Comrades overall is not an easy thing when it comes to training; in other words, to work for it, however, it’s difficult to accomplish it.

“My time this year is not my personal best; I have a personal best of seven hours and 29 minutes with a silver medal. I did not want to push much on the race considering that my body is still heavy from a race I ran the previous week in Cape Town,” he said.

He is not only a dedicated professional who ensures the safety of the public, but also a long-distance enthusiast and has completed multiple races like the 100km Ultra Trail Drakensburg that took place in April.

Kennedy has also qualified for the Ultra-trail du Mont-Blanc race in August, set to take place in France, and is currently ranking fifth overall.

His advice to other runners who wish to participate in the competition is to simply have a balanced life and work on training, core, and speed.
