Horizon karatekas impress at nationals

Horizon Karate Centre Karateka shines at the SA JKA Championships bringing home a total of 39 medals.

Karateka of the Horizon Karate Centre have once again proven their prowess after doing exceptionally well at the South African JKA National Championships.

The championships were held at the famous Ellis Park Arena over two days in May and was one of the biggest and most competitive martial arts events, with over 4 000 entries from all over the nine provinces. The South African team was also scouted and selected.

Trained by 6th Dan Sensei Wendy Wannenburg, the centre’s karateka dominated the competition and became a true definition of reaping good results, bringing home a total of 39 well-deserved medals, which include 11 golds, 10 silvers, and 18 bronzes.

Wendy praised the standard of the competition, saying it was excellent, and she further mentioned that the entire tournament or competition is regarded as a test of skill within the framework of traditional karate training and not as a sport.

Gold medal winners were:

• Raiyu Jularr – Junior Novice Boys White Kata 6
• Liam Davis – Junior Novice Boys Green Kata 7
• Kgosi Kumalo – Junior Novice Boys Green Kata 8
• Cameron Callegari – Junior Novice Boys Red Kata 14
• Piper Meyer – Junior Novice Girls Green Kumite 9
• Naleli Khaki – Junior Novice Girls Green Kata 14
• Tychael Harvie – Senior Novice Men G-B-P Kata Open

Wendy added that although it was a massive competition that saw good results, it was a learning curve for the karateka, as karate is a long-term way of life.
