Skating to success

Young figure skater confidently thrives in the Rising Stars Competition placing her first in her category.

The South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) is a non-profit organisation that promotes and encourages figure skating in South Africa, including single, pair, ice dancing, and synchronised skating on ice and synthetic surfaces.

On May 26, Layla Shepherd, a learner from Charter College International High School, competed in the advanced section for the Silver Falcon Girls at the Rising Stars Figure Skating competition, at Northgate Ice Rink.

Layla told the Roodepoort Northsider that the preparations leading up to the competition required her to choose a song to practice her routine with her coach.

“Preparing for the competition is a lot of work, and it’s required of you to always land your jumps, even at practice. It’s very rewarding after performing your best,” Layla said.

With her family and friends supporting her as she started her journey at the age of eight, she is skating her way confidently to the top.

Layla placed first in her category and was awarded best jump overall after she fearlessly landed both her axel jumps and left the audience in awe of her outstanding performance.
