Fighters punch in the ring

Local MMA impress at recent competition.

The six fighters from Raptorock Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Fitness showcased their skills and determination at the Versus 9 competition held in Pretoria on May 18, bringing home an impressive six medals for their club.

Braydon Graham, Msizi Masilela, Aidlin Williams, Siphamandla Oliphant, Quinley Scraton, and Divan Wiessener have done admirably well at the Submission Grappling competition and managed to secure two gold medals, three silver, and one bronze. These talented fighters competed against 35 other clubs from around the country, and their club is currently ranking seventh best with only six fighters out of 45 entering the competition.

Their coach, Janus de Lange, a former (Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) professional athlete, personal trainer, and MMA coach, stated that this was one of the biggest tournaments and expressed his pride in their achievements, noting that it was a remarkable feat for such a small club.

In addition to their success on the mat, the fighters had the opportunity to meet Drikus Du Plessis, the current world UFC middleweight Champion, further adding to their experience at the event. Janus commended his athletes for their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, highlighting the growth and progress they have made as members of Raptorock MMA and Fitness.

The club is currently gearing up for the MMA Jungle Fight Championship taking place on June 22 at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Randburg, and according to Janus, they are currently training rigorously for this competition.
