Crawford youngster heading for hockey nationals

Young hockey star to shine in national competition.

A Crawford International Ruimsig learner is continuing to embrace his hockey skills and developing his talent at a national level.

Fushani Wanga started playing hockey in 2018 and quickly learnt the basics. His love for the sport has been growing ever since. Initially aiming for the Eastern Province provincial team, his plans changed when he moved to Johannesburg. Setting a new goal to make the southern team, Fushani faced numerous obstacles but continued training hard with his goal in mind.

“Making it to the U16 Southern Hockey side is a very big achievement for me, and I’m proud to say that it was a tough journey. I’m very grateful to be part of the team and I’m looking forward to being on the field soon,” Fushani said.

Fushani is set to compete against teams like Western Province, KZN Inland and Coastal, Boland, Northern Gauteng and more at the inter-provincial tournament taking place from June 30 to July 4. The tournament will be held at the prestigious boys’ boarding school Michaelhouse, founded in 1896 and located in the Balgowan Valley in the KZN Midlands.

“I am so ecstatic for Fushani, he has put in the hard work in the off-season, and this is now his time to reap the rewards,” Crawford’s head of hockey and teacher, Malcolm Faddy said.

“The only one who can tell you ‘you can’t win’ is you, and you don’t have to listen,” he adds.

The Crawford family wishes Fushani the best of luck in his upcoming tournament and believes his hard work and dedication have truly paid off.
