The bowling greens at the Florida North Bowling Club (FNBC) were filled with excited chatter and some friendly banter on February 29, as the club celebrated Leap Day.
According to Francois van Eeden, the FNBC secretary, all the clubs in the Sables District host an annual Ladies’ Day, saying ‘this event is a highlight on every club’s calendar, and it is always well supported’.
The event was attended by 96 women from clubs all over the West Rand, including Discovery, Florida North, Noordheuwel, Krugersdorp, Maraisburg, Witpoortjie, Honeydew, Nomads Ladies, Randburg and Randfontein.
Francois added that, because the event took place on Leap Day, the theme was Leap into Bowls.
“The women had to interpret this theme through their clothing. The colour for the theme was green which represents the colour of a frog, which, in turn, represents leaping,” he said, smiling.
It was not only the participants who went all out to represent the theme, the dining hall was decorated with all shades of greens, with frogs peeking around every corner, and even sitting on the tables.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at 8:00, before the women took to the greens where the competition was mostly friendly, and played in good spirits. Before the prizes were handed out, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch.
Main prizes on the day included prizes for the teams placing first, second and third, and there were also prizes for the team with the best spirit, the best-dressed team, the most touchers as well as raffles for hampers.
The event doubles as a fundraiser, and Francois said that this year, all proceeds were donated to Cansa.
