Roodepoort Rugby Club players honoured at prestigious awards

Over 10 players were honoured at the rugby awards across various categories relating to player of the year and most improved player to name a few.

It was a prestigious night on November 3 at Deck & Dam at Sunset Bistro in Muldersdrift as the players from Roodepoort Rugby Club were awarded for their respect, dedication, and passion for rugby.

The annual awards provide a platform where players are rewarded for their achievements throughout the year and according to club president Theuns Naude, during the awards recipients elect their player’s player of the year.

Stefan Hodkinson, second team player of the year.

Five teams’ winners are awarded: first team, second team, third team, U21 and U19 with categories ranging from player of the year, player’s player of the year, forward player of the year, and backline player of the year.

Lashe Disu, U21 player of the year.

The U21 awards saw Player of the Year Lashe Disu, Player’s Player of the Year Austin Letimela, Forward Player of the Year Dwayne Lombard, Backline Player of the Year Zander Potgieter and Most Improved Player Roshin Moses, while the U19 awards saw David Poolman, Jason Joubert, Shaun Oelofse, CJ Feast and Zander Enslin receiving awards across the various categories.

Thania van der Lith receives the chairperson’s award for outstanding service to the club.

Roodepoort Rugby Club was started in June 1943 and was associated with The West Rand Rugby Subdivision under the name of Rand Leases Rugby Club. In 1945 the club was promoted to senior status and in 1948 the club changed its name to Rand Leases Roodepoort Rugby Club.

Under the leadership of Chris van Coller, who was elected as chairperson in 1977, the club changed its name to Roodepoort Rugby Club on November 30, 1978. This is also the date that the second constitution of the club came into effect. The third constitution of the club came into effect on November 17, 1992, under the new chairperson Ludie Torien.
