58-year-old parkrunner shares inspirational story

Roodepoort resident does not let his past injuries determine his future victories.

Roodepoort local Billy Dooling (58) has recently completed his 20th parkrun after the loss of his leg in a mining accident 33 years ago.

Although originally from Kimberley, Billy has been a resident in Roodepoort for two decades working as a logistics manager for a manufacturing company.

He is happily married and boasts of having two boys and three grandchildren.

“My family and friends motivated me to join the parkrun at the start of the year. This was my first time actively exercising,” explained Billy. He added that he has friends who have reached their 100th run milestones.

“I just reached my 20th parkrun and my whole family enjoys the parkrun, including my six-year-old grandson,” exclaimed Billy, adding that it is a great way for the family to spend time together.

Looking back, Billy’s first parkrun was at the Florida location where he ran the route in 64mins.

“My personal best is now at 45 minutes,” he exclaimed proudly.

Billy elaborated that he has improved his personal best over the last six parkruns and his goal is to get to a personal best of 40 mins by the end of this year. He also noted that he visits the gym three times a week as he is motivated to stay fit and healthy as he grows older.

“I think losing my leg has made me a better person. For me it’s all about the mindset as it has not stopped me from achieving anything I set out to do; it’s made me stronger,” stated Billy, “as for keeping fit makes you feel so much better mentally and physically. I personally think it changes your outlook on life and it’s so much fun!”
