Local daycare centre shines at Orlando Olympics

The Africa Ke Rona Olympics held in Orlando saw more than 450 participants entering to exhibit their skills in a bid to foster young talent and expose them to sports from a young age.

Learners from the Warm Shelter Day and Aftercare (WSDA) in Matholesville had the opportunity to participate in the Africa Ke Rona Olympics earlier in October as part of Young Voices Academy’s integrated mandate to cultivate skills development in Early Childhood Development (ECD) from an early age.

Eight ECD centres, including some in Matholesville and Roodepoort, participated in this event and the purpose was to encourage children in sports and to bring ECDs together.

The day saw over 450 participants witness the commitment and children’s performances.

The programme focuses on cultivating talent from a young age.

Lungiswa Gabazana, principal of WSDA, said that as daycare centres, they aim to start this activity for young people as they want to equip them with experience from a young age.

“They must also know that the Olympics does not start at high school. We want to build this activity so that they can perform it in future and have the necessary self-esteem, respect, and love for the sport,” Lungiswa said.

This sport requires discipline and creates sociability with others in other areas.

The event was about the Africa Ke Rona Olympics which was the slogan as Lungiswa said she hopes that maybe, one day they will see one child coming from their centre and make them proud to have changed the life of at least one person within their community.
