Welridge Academy gymnast on her way to national championships

Zoe Mathabe is graceful with floor and beam routines, earning three medals in two competitions.

A young gymnast is continuing her exhibition of perfect balance and has the world at her fingertips.

Welridge Academy’s Zoe Mathabe took part in the district and provincial gymnastics championships on August 19 and 26. At the district competition, Zoe earned first place for her floor routine and third place for her efforts on the beam. Her performance earned her full senior Central Gauteng colours and qualified her for the provincial competition.

At provincials a week later, Zoe again won gold for her floor routine, with judges giving her a score of 9.00. Training at JGC Gymnastics in Newlands, the 12-year-old has booked her spot on the team to participate in the national championships in October.

“I’m very proud. Thank you to everyone that I know that has helped me. I feel like I can go to nationals and do well,” said Zoe, who is participating in the same level for her hip-hop dancing. Zoe’s mom, Mogolodi, is in awe of her daughter, saying, “At times we get overwhelmed by her stage presence. I am proud as she is being rewarded for all her hard work.”
