Young Ruimsig motorbike racer wins 1st place

Young Crawfordian raced his third round of the Redstar Club Series, came out on top, and is ready for the next round.

Delmas witnessed an exciting day of high-speed action as young racers took on the challenges of Round 3 of the Redstar Club Series at Redstar Raceway on July 30. Braving the bone-chilling cold, these skilled riders showcased their talent and determination on the track.

For Amo Phiri, a rising star from Crawford Ruimsig, the journey to success was not without its hurdles.

“Saturday was our practice and it wasn’t the best. I crashed a few times, causing my dad stress because he was worried if I would have a good race on Sunday. With the help of my older brother, I had a good last session to finish off Saturday,” Amo exclaimed.

Despite the freezing conditions on Sunday, the young racers geared up for the race featuring small Honda 100cc bikes. Run by Neil Harran from South African Motorcycle Racing Academy, these races offered intense competition without the luxury of tyre warmers.

Amo and his fellow racers came up with a creative solution, “Myself and the other racers would park our bikes in the sun to try to warm up the tyres.”

Amo’s tenacity and skill shone during the qualifiers, where he secured an impressive first place. Heat 1 proved to be a defining moment for the young talent as he pulled away from his competitors, winning the race with an astonishing 23.7-second gap to the rider behind him. Heat 2 saw Amo reach new heights, recording the fastest lap of the day at 1:09.195 and securing another commanding victory with a lead of 9.466 seconds.

Reflecting on his triumph, Amo beamed with pride, “I took first place overall for the day and I am currently leading the NSF100 championship with one more race day to go.”

As the Redstar Club Series nears its climax, the young speedster’s determination and passion have made him a force to be reckoned with on the track.
