Florida Lake Canoe Club to host flatwater marathon

Teams are selected by the provincial selectors at interprovincial events, to select teams to participate in their age groups, internationally.

The Florida Lake Canoe Club announces its second annual Flatwater Marathon Race at Florida Lake on August 19, which will have short-distance races for beginners, younger learners, older paddlers, and the less fit.

Lessons are held at Florida Lake on Sundays at 14:00 which offer affordable rates, including boats and paddles, allowing learners to test the sport before purchasing equipment.

Paddling is a technical sport moving forward, unlike rowing, using Eskimo kayaks for racing boats. Foot pedals steer the boats, and using a single paddle requires training and technique advice.

Race entrants must be signed off by a safety officer, join a club, and affiliate with Gauteng Canoe Union and Canoeing South Africa for a race number.

Races can be entered online through the Canoe South Africa (CSA) portal once registered.

Clubs organise races throughout the year, focusing on sprints, short fast races, and long distances like 200m, 500m, 1 000m, and 5 000m. From May to August, marathon races are longer, requiring portages and smooth, efficient grace.

River races in Johannesburg include Jukskei and Klip rivers, with Parys known for its wild water paddling, featuring rapids and white water, offering unique and enjoyable experiences.

CSA offers various water sports, including surfing, kayaking, and river paddling.
