West Rand Toastmasters welcome fresh faces as they wind down 2022

Best contributor was voted in as President Sipokazi Swana while Louise da Silva won best Table Topic.

West Rand Toastmasters welcomed a few fresh faces on October 6.

Held in the darkness of load-shedding at the Discovery Bowling Club, the club welcomed guest Nondumiso Dlamini, visiting Toastmaster, Devan Pearson, from Honeydew Toastmasters Club and extended a warm welcome to their new member Portia Ntlatleng.

Without a theme that evening, there was still a ‘Word of the Evening’, ‘Onus’, chosen by West Rand Toastmasters President, Sipokazi Swana. For the evening, Sipokazi took on the role of Toastmaster while Vice President of Education and Immediate Past President, Thato Majela, performed the role of programme alterations. Glen Campbell took on the role of timekeeper and proposed a toast to all departed Toastmasters who we hope were with us in spirit.

There were two prepared speeches on the night, first from Sipokazi who delivered her speech from Pathways Level 3.1 titled Travel Broadens the Mind. Sipokazi took us on her journey and experiences during her travels. She was evaluated by Devan. Thato then delivered his speech which is for his Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Project titled Are Our Meetings Still Meaningful. Thato is hailed as the glue that holds the club together and the onus is on members to work together to maintain West Rand Toastmasters as the best in the West.

After recess, Modieng Ramikosi performed the role of Table Topics Chair which was her first attempt, doing extremely well. The theme was It’s Not Too Late. Various members and guests were asked questions on this theme and as usual Table Topics was a great success. Table Topics are unprepared speeches which help facilitate off-the-cuff speech. Devan was the evening’s General Evaluator and offered food for thought going forward.

Best contributor was voted in as Sipokazi, Louise da Silva won best Table Topic and Modieng received a Certificate for First Time Table Topics Chair. Last but not least, Nondumiso, the guest speaker was acknowledged for volunteering.
