Current and former national representatives grave the greens at the 36th Leases Classic

Team from Roosevelt Park Bowling Club go home with overall winner trophy

Leases Bowling Club hosted their prestigious annual invitational, September 17 and 18.

Held over two days, the showpiece event featured several past and current national team representatives in singles, pairs and fours competition. Saturday saw singles and fours action while Sunday was teamwork day with pairs and more fours play. All scores counted to the weekend’s grand total and when all was said and done, the Roosevelt Park Bowling Club team of Bobby Donnelly, Shaun Thomas, Paul Smith and Warwick Sagar walked away the overall winners.

Hosted for the 36th time, chairman of Leases Bowling Club, Lionel Claasens, detailed the weekend in his own words, saying “The Leases Classic is one of the most prestigious events on the bowling calendar; it’s invite-only and you will rub shoulders with literally the best of the best. It’s not limited to our district either, so we get a chance to host bowlers from other districts, something that wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for this tournament.”

“We had our own Proteas representing the club and World Bowls players that had represented South Africa on more than one occasion. They are real superheros in the bowls circles. This particular weekend was a huge success. Werner Blucher and his wife Dianne were the main driving forces behind it and with an excellent committee had all the support they needed to get things done right the first time. Events like this just underpins the value of team work.

“With all the sponsors and donations we received we could really make it exceptional with great prizes and a good amount of prize money to be won. I think in summary it was amazing to see these legends bowl at our club, be witness to some amazing shots and experience the love of bowls first-hand.”
