This year the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge partnered with Parkrun South African to allow participants to attend physical events.

Saturday, September 3 saw delighted parkrunners take on their usual route at Len Rutter Park in Florida Park to participate in the big day of the Challenge.

Kip Norman who is the parkrun Ambassador for the West Rand and responsible for Roodepoort, Ruimsig, Sterkfontein and Delta Park parkruns told the Record that parkrun is a fully inclusive and safe environment for ladies to run or walk on Saturday mornings.

“A multitude of women participated in the SPAR 5km Women’s Virtual Challenge at parkrun venues nationally. Hopefully we will see more ladies registering with parkrun which is and always will be free,” said Norman.

The Virtual Challenge was launched in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing South Africans of all walks of life to participate in the event in solidarity during a time of uncertainty and strife.

It was a special day for Jenny Donald and her furry friend, Jacket who reached a milestone of 250 parkruns.

Parkrun registration is once-off, and participants should remember to bring their parkrun barcode to the venue to ensure their results are registered.
