Local judoka all psyched up for World Championships

The team departs for Poland on Friday, September 9 where Reece-Hunter and Moagi will be competing with their Nage no Kata, which is a kata of various groups of throwing techniques.

KJK Judo Club judoka Moagi Molefe and Reece-Hunter Erasmus have qualified to represent South Africa at the Junior World Kata Championships to be held in Kraków, Poland from September 12 to 14.

According to the organisers, the event will present immense opportunities for the best athletes to show their precision and perfection.

Doctor Neels van Schalkwyk who is also from the local dojo is the coach and manager of the South African team.

Neels will be doing his International Judo Federation (IJF) Kata Judging examinations whilst in Poland.

Moagi and his partner Reece-Hunter won the National Kata Trials for 2 Kata before they were subsequently selected to participate in the Senior African Kata Championships which were held in Oran, Algeria on May 25.

The duo won two bronze medals at the Senior African Kata Championships before Moagi was selected to represent South Africa at the Junior African Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

In June Moagi and Reece-Hunter won a gold medal for their Kata at the Gauteng Kata Championships. At the South African Open Judo Championships in Gqeberha Moagi again won the gold medal and secured the National Championship title.

Having been awarded gold and silver medals at the South African Open Kata Championships the local judoka qualified to represent South Africa at the World Junior and Senior Kata Championships in Poland.
